Once
upon a time, in a classroom not unlike yours and mine... ...full
of knick knacks, brick bracks & other snacks, there visited an author named Preston
McClear... ...with
a stack of books under his arm. And
so begins the highly imaginative story, with dazzling illustrations by Nicholas
Dollak, of Preston McClear and the children he visits with weekly. When
he was a boy Preston's parents were told he would never be able to read or write
due to a severe learning disability. Preston will talk about how being learning
disabled taught him to over come obstacles and how he went on to become a writer.
He'll
show the students how a children's book is physically put together. He'll bring
transparencies of the illustrations to show on an over head projector to the students,
allowing them to see the the illustration process from the rough sketch to the
finished painting. Preston
will read a story out loud and answer questions from the students. This is always
his favorite part. Presentations
generally last about forty five minutes. Preston prefers to visit with students
in a library or class room. Smaller groups allow for larger participation from
the students. For this reason the presentation is usually done several times during
the course of the day. Presentations are geared for grades K-5. Having
